Sz Dossier

One Line of a Huge Switchboard of Connectivity

This site is only one of many which Uttley has developed over the years. His webpresence sprawls across practically all free platforms and social media venues. What, you may ask, is the point of having and maintaining so many accounts and blogs and profiles and pages?

Simple. The aim is to reach as many people as possible, so to canvas as many available venues as possible is just good practice toward the goal.

And why does Uttley want to reach as many people as he can? Well, the answer to that question is multi-fold. Like all writers, he naturally craves readers. And then there is the trickle of funds generated by sale of books.

But there are more complex and substantial reasons for Uttley's online campaigning... namely to do battle with the egregious stigma which maligns sufferers of mental illness in general and schizophrenia in particular, and also to combat the isolation and alienation, avolition and anhedonia symptomatic of Sz.

Big words there. To speak more plainly, meaningful activity and socialization with others are good medicine for Sz. Avolition means lack of will power. Anhedonia means finding no joy in any activity. Online pursuits provide Uttley with opportunities and challenges he can rise to even when his will is weak, and often prove diverting enough to distract him from pesky symptoms.
